THE GRADED EXAMINATIONS IN SPOKEN ENGLISH (GESE)

The GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English) exams test candidates’ ability in listening and speaking. They are one-to-one oral examinations with a Trinity examiner.

It is suitable for:

• Those wishing to gain a recognised English Language Qualification
• Those wishing to study and improve their English listening and speaking skills

There are four stages to the GESE:

1. Initial Stage (Grades 1-3)
2. Elementary Stage (Grades 4-6)
3. Intermediate Stage (Grades 7-9)
4. Advanced Stage (Grades 10-12)

The syllabus at each stage covers:

• Ability to use language functions effectively
• Use of Grammar
• Understanding and use of suitable vocabulary
• Development of skills in fluency and pronunciation

It is assessed by a Trinity Examiner:

• By an oral examination which lasts 5-25 minutes depending on the Stage you are taking.
• Certification is awarded by Trinity College UK.

• Preparation classes before/on each test date (upon request) with experienced and qualified tutors
• The facilities to take the test with a rapid immediate provisional result

INTEGRATED SKILLS IN ENGLISH EXAMINATIONS (ISE)

Assess all four language skills – Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading – interacting with each other as they do in the real world. An ISE exam forms a natural part of any course of English language study, undertaken in a group or individually

The assessment for this consists of THREE components:

1. Portfolio Tasks – work completed during the course of study at LCB will count towards your final grade
2. Controlled Written Exam
3. Speaking Test

We offer a 90 hour course taught by expert and experienced tutors leading to the final assessment.

It consists of several LEVELS:

• ISE Level 0
• ISE Level I,II,III and IV (which corresponds with Grades 4-12 in the GESE spoken exams)

It is suitable for:

• Those wishing to gain a recognised English Language Qualification
• For those who would like to visit the UK on a Visitors Visa to enhance their English Language Skills and enjoy a Study Visit/Tours hosted by us at London College of Business. Please see our Brochure (pdf)
• For anyone who would like to improve all their English Language Skills with a world renowned qualification

At each Level the Syllabus includes:

• Development of Speaking Skills – use of fluency and pronunciation
• Listening Comprehension
• Developing Reading Strategies to enhance comprehension and skills to process text
• Writing skills (demonstrated by the Student Portfolio) showing a range of skills and an ability to write in different styles and for different audiences.

SPOKEN ENGLISH FOR WORK (SEW)

The Spoken English for Work (SEW) exam is a unique assessment of spoken English communication in a work context. Through a series of interactive tasks, SEW tests assess a full range of practical speaking and listening skills that are required in the world of work on a day-to-day basis.

This Course is suitable for:

• who is either preparing for work or already has some experience of work or business.
• anyone wishing to demonstrate their communicative abilities within a work context but they are not reliant on professional experience.
• Anyone overseas who has an interest in improving their Business English skills and would like to visit the UK (on a Visitor Visa) and combine a course of study with exam and certification with visits to Businesses, networking and visits to cultural sights. We offer:

• A full package for visitors to the UK with Business English leading to the SEW examination. See brochure.
• We offer a 90 hour course of study in preparation for this examination with our well qualified team of tutors
• Successful completion will result in a certificate issued by Trinity College London UK

There are FOUR LEVELS for the SEW:

1. B1 *
2. B2*
3. B2+*
4. C1*

Each Level is assessed by:

• A Telephone Task
• A Presentation
• A Discussion on a work-based topic

The Syllabus consists of:

• Development of language functions appropriate to each level
• The appropriate use of Grammar
• Development of a range of vocabulary especially appropriate to the Business context
• Developing fluency skills linked with the use of correct vocabulary (phonology)
